The Guardian: Russian involvement in US vote raises fears for European elections

CIA investigation may have implications for upcoming French and German polls, even raising doubts over integrity of Brexit vote

The CIA’s conclusion that Russia covertly intervened to swing last month’s presidential election in favour of Donald Trump but its actions did not place the overall credibility of the result in doubt will be hard to swallow for some.

The classified CIA investigation, which has not been published, may also have implications for the integrity of Britain’s Brexit referendum last June, and how upcoming elections in France and Germany could be vulnerable to Russian manipulation. The latest revelations are not entirely new. What is fresh is the bald assertion that Moscow was working for Trump.

WNU Editor: The U.S., France, and Germany have been influencing elections in other countries for years. And now they are upset that someone may be trying to influence theirs (and a big maybe at that) .... the irony of all of this speaks for itself.

I think the difference is, when the US tries to influence elections in other countries it is done openly. At least in the opinions of Europen leaders, the Russians are trying to do this covertly. I agree that proof will need to be dupplied for these claims.

I seem to recall Obama folks trying to influence Brexit and Israeli votes in the past year or so. Hypocritical much.

That's also an easy way for the loser: accusing "a foreign power" instead of itself.

I wonder if French and German candidates will avoid IT security protocols and leave themselves and their parties open to foreign hacking?

Stephen,

The attempts to jnfluence BREXIT were open as was the attempt to influence Israeli elections. I think what they are concerned about are covert attempts.

Frankly POTUS and his team would have been better off doing NOTHING in either BREXIT or the Israeli elections. When a ridiculously unpopular US LOTUS and his team overtly try and influence elections either by threats or sending in their operatives for a certain side they only serve to encourage the affected oarties to vote opposite of what they propose!!

Jac,

You are quite correct. Unless the Democrats can be circumspect and learn from their failings they haven't seen anything yet. Future losses will prevail in comparison to their 2016 losses. Of course they could go the petty thug option. "We can't lord over America. Therefore we will try and destroy it." We pray the Democrats will not take that option.

Anon,

You are quite correct. Given the ridiculous stupidity of Democrat IT security, even I probably could have hacked into it. If they are this stupid here, how would they have handled the life and death matters of national security? Probably not well.

With that said Americans didn't base their decisions on 11/8/16 on such circumspect thinking. Day after day they were faced with looking at an organization in team HRC that while having vast resources was fat, slow, ugly, and stupid. To compound this situation, they were repeatedly told by media pundits that they MUST vote for this revulsion.

In contrast team DJT presented an alternative that while having limited resources was lean, fast, brilliant, and many would say beautiful. (The notion of geam Trump being beautiful is debatable. The other attributes are not. To deny them is to be stuck in ideology.)

Given the options, it's not hard to grasp why Americans chose team Trump. Furthermore the current policies under BHO that HRC was going to continue would've meant almost certain death to most Americans and tbeir families. Everyone understands such finalities. As such, it seemed a no brainer to take a chance on Trump.
